Donut-7 Rocket Thankful

Oh, friends. I’m writing this on Monday night. It’s 9:15 and Chris and I have finally sat down, exhausted. It’s been one of those emotional nights of demanding children, erupting tantrums, long efforts to love, snuggle and get our emotional three-year-old into his bed more than an hour later than he should have been.

Some days work and some days need some fixing.

Some nights you eat dark chocolate at 9:15 because you love it and some nights you eat it because your body begs in survival mode for chocolate in your belly and you obey.

Some nights you finally get the dishes into the dishwasher and collapse onto the couch and beneath the hum of the dishwasher you hear your child’s voice in tandem with your husband’s. And your husband is making up a song, singing in his sweetest tone-deaf hum the words “Dinosaur poop! Dinosaur poop! I really love dinosaur poop!” because, of all the lovely songs we actually know and can sing to prepare our son for his entrance into the realm of night, August asks for songs about his current scientific obsessions. Yes, how paleontologists study fossilized dinosaur poop happens to be one of them.

And you lean your head back and let out the long sigh you’ve carried through the day and you listen to that song about million-year-old poop and you feel the grateful well springing.

So, yes, I’m thankful for:

  • “Dinosaur Poop” as performed by Chris Hohorst
  • This amazing rocket built and painted by Chris and August last Saturday. August named it “Donut 7″ after his and his father’s Saturday donut shop.

  • These words of John Calvin from Ann Voskamp’s blog yesterday: “The stability of the world depends on the rejoicing in God’s works…. If on earth, such praise of God does not come to pass… then the whole order of nature will be thrown into confusion…”
  • a new green skirt
  • a photo of my brother and 89-year-old grandfather laughing at their shared birthday party
  • a 73 degree day in January
  • my friend Elissa’s positive health news
  • learning about antibodies and white blood cells along with my scientific son
  • rosy boy cheeks
  • a determined almost-10 month old who thinks “No-No” is the funniest game he’s ever heard
  • lunch date at Tacodeli with my main squeeze
  • fleece pajama pants, dark chocolate, a long sigh, an early(ish) bedtime

It’s Thankful Tuesday. What’s your Thankful???

  1. MM working from home this morning, which meant an extra hour of snuggling under the covers… hot, french press coffee on a below-freezing morning… my new, warm, cozy, beautiful sweater… piles of clean laundry to fold… a forecast of rain…
